The Washington County Highway Department maintains nearly 1,000 miles of county roads.
One of only three county highway departments in Tennessee with its own asphalt plant, the Department employs 88 people and uses nearly 300 pieces of equipment to provide drivers with safe roads in good repair. All through roads and the majority of dead ends in Washington County are recently paved. Very few counties in the nation can make such a claim.
|Washington County Highway Superintendent John B. Deakins Jr. has worked for the Highway Department since 1983, and been superintendent since 1992. A native of Sulphur Springs and sixth-generation Washington Countian, Deakins worked for more than a decade in the private sector, as both a farmer and co-owner of a construction company, before beginning his career with the Highway Department.
Deakins is currently serving with the Tennessee County Services Association. He is married to Teresa Deakins, and they are the parents of two grown children.
