Your Solid Waste Department — Keeping Washington County Beautiful
The Washington County Solid Waste Department operates five convenience centers/recycling locations for the benefit of all Washington County residents, including residents of Johnson City and Jonesborough.
The centers — located in Gray, Cash Hollow (Johnson City), Limestone, Lamar and Locust Mount — keep many tons of waste from entering landfills annually while providing residents an affordable, convenient way to dispose of trash and recyclables.
The centers exist to serve residential customers only. There is no charge for residents to bring household trash and recyclables to the centers.
In 2009 alone, the centers recycled more than 2,800 tons of metals, cardboard, tires, paper and other materials. This material brought in $198,249 on the recyclables market. Landfilling it would have cost the county more than $96,000 in tipping fees, so the net savings created by citizens and the department's recycling efforts totaled $294,712.
